Hilda Kraus age 99, of Westport CT passed away at home on June 2, 2014.
Hilda was predeceased by her parents Isaac and Sadie (Langer) and three sisters Ann, Ruth, Helen, and two brothers Jack and Morris.
Two nephews, Dick Kraus of Long Island NY and Joel Goldschmidt of Red Bank, NJ, survive her. Also long time friend Nell Mullen of Fairfield CT.
She was born in New York City. She had a B.A. from Hunter College 1935: post graduate at International Academy of Art, Salzburg, Austria, 1967, 72, 77. Apprentice to a Danish silversmith 3 years. Studied traditional enameling methods in the great centers of Europe (France, Italy, Germany).
Hilda was a well known designer, artist, jeweler, enamellist and metal work designer. She at one time had shops in N.Y.C and Maine. When she moved to Westport in the 50’s she had her studio in her home.
Hilda was a lifetime member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists. The Society for Connecticut Crafts awarded her the title Master Craftsman. Over the years she has won many awards and prizes for her work both here and in Europe especially for her work in cloisonné enamels.
The family appreciates all of the loving care provided to Hilda by her aides, Ann Marie Williams Catalina Hoffberg. Also to the many people who helped her on her last journey. Stratford VNA, PMasonic Hospice, Bridgeport Geriatric Center.
